Ayalew Talema, author of "Momentum for Ethiopia”
“In 2011, I was in Belgium as a first year PhD student.
At that time I had a chat with many Ethiopians living in the Middle East via
the Internet. I was highly saddened by the hard ship Ethiopians face daily in
there. The stories I heard were always full of deep misery and dissatisfaction,
”Ayalew Talema, a Lecturer at Jimma University and a PhD candidate in
Bio-science Engineering in KU Leuven University.
“ In response to that I wrote a poem entitled ' Be Brave, we
have great hope' that convey a message of hope that we can have the life we
want in our homeland if we have the determination and the dream based on our
rich natural, historical and social resources and heritage. The poem was posted
on facebook.”
Except few, many he chatted with didn’t believe that one can
have a better future in Ethiopia, Ayelew said, “I remember one extreme
pessimist comment, 'If wishes were horses, we would ride them,' which irritated
and set me thinking deeply about my country and others advancement.”
Why we Ethiopians are poor while our history is great? How
other are modernized and led a prosperous life ? What held us back? Is our mind
set ready for change? and some more questions were rolling in his mind. It
might be questions many of are asking too.
He tried to find answers through reading and discussing with
professionals. After two years of continuous search he came up with an answer:
“Momentum for Ethiopia.”
According to him, Ethiopia have it all to attain prosperity
but lacks unified momentum towards advancement. “Advancement is depending on
the rate of harmonious motion or antagonistic frictional forces. To understand
the effect of motion or being static one has to refresh the Newton’s law of
physical motion.”
'Momentum for Ethiopia' argues that the Newton’s law of motion
are applicable for social change. Newton’s 1st law of motion states, A body at
rest remain at rest and a body in motion remain in motion unless acted upon by
an unbalanced force. “This law is applicable to human life too. Ethiopians are
extremely stable in their life. That stability creates further stability and
end up in laziness and dull mind.”
On the other hand, once a person is in motion, the motion
aggravates another motion and they remain active in real life. Such life style
is the feature of Europeans and Americans as we all know. They understand the
law clearly. Being fast is important criteria to gain momentum. So, one of the
reasons for our retard growth is being very slow in every day life.
According to the 3rd Newton law of motion, for every action
there is an equal and opposite reaction. This law is fully applicable to human
social life also. For instance,if one person loves another person, one gets the
same response from the other person. This implies that to gain and keep
positive momentum individuals must be in harmony with the system, he stated.
“But we, Ethiopians loose energy by creating unnecessary actions and reactions
without considering its energy dissipation effect. Being in love and in harmony
with everybody is another requirement to attain continuous momentum and change
in life.”
The work done and economic growth is directly proportional to
our force. The force applied for one activity is depending on the rate of
acceleration. If there is no speed the work done is slow and as a result the
economic growth is also slow. “That is why most of the peoples in the advanced
world are in constant movement in their daily life. Every one must move
continuously just to avoid laziness even if there might not be any reason to do
so.”
Momentum is a physics word which is defined as the quantity of
motion (P = MV, P = momentum, M = mass and V= velocity). As to Ayalew, the
momentum of any object click is determined by its mass and its velocity. The higher
the mass and velocity, the higher is the momentum and the work done due to its
power. “When we see momentum in social application, it is known as behavioral
momentum or a social momentum, commonly known as 'The BIG MO' (Big
Momentum),that operates on a large scale.”
The concept first applied in America in the 1960s sporting
events,as momentum appeared to have an effect on a team's performance.
Successful teams were said to have 'The Big Mo' on their side.Since
then, momentum is a driving factor in political campaigns, social upheavals,
economic cycles and financial bubbles and the like.
Several researchers in psychology, sociology, marketing,
politics, religion, science, etc are still puzzled by the unclear and
unpredictable power of momentum. In 2007, three researchers from the London
Business School, Elroy Dimson, Paul Marsh and Mike Staunton, observed in their
paper, '108 Years of Momentum Profits',that momentum appears to have an
inordinate and unexplained impact on the behavior of investment markets that
contradicts the efficient market theory.
One of the researchers, Dr Paul Marsh said, "We remain
puzzled (by these findings) and we are not the only ones; most academics are
vaguely embarrassed by this.” In the lead-up to the British election in May 2010,
James Forsyth, the political editor of the Spectator magazine, wrote, "The
Big Mo is with the Tories. In a campaign, momentum matters. It is, for good or
ill, the prism through which the media report things.”
“After reading several articles on momentum and watching how
things are moving fast in the European market, I began to understand that the
great secret and binding factor for advancement in every sector of a nation is
momentum.”
Thereby the reason he wrote a book on momentum is to disclose
the great secret to Ethiopians. “Interestingly, the writing goes fast and I
managed to write a series of 7 books on the subjcet. The first of the series,
'Momentum for Ethiopia', is already published and on market now.”
The book was inaugurated in Jimma University on November 9,
2013. One of the critics of the book was Dr. Abush Ayalew, himself an author of
more than 15 books. Dr. Abush commented that the book is very timely to the
nation. Hence it must be inaugurated in Addis Ababa in the presence of the
public media and known authors to enrich and disseminate the idea. Accordingly
the book will be inaugurated in Addis Ababa University (AAU), Faculty of
Business and Economic, Eshetu Chole Hall on 14 December, 2013 in the presence
of Ethiopian Writers Association representatives, AAU lectureres, students,
invited guests .
Is there a mechanism to gain momentum? The answer is yes. But,
the momentum is raised due to several attraction forces. More than 17 magnetic
powers are identified to attract momentum, according to Ayalew. “The first and
most important power is the power of motivation. All the past great
achievements were done due to special motivation of great individuals to excel
the normal trend.”
As far as one is fully motivated and dedicated to his dream,
nature is willing to be with him. For further understanding I recommend to
interested readers to read “Momentum for Ethiopia.”
